Tulsa 2009

I went to Tulsa for a long weekend since Carol is there for three weeks of training for work. She is staying at an average typical airport Best Western. There is a nice pool there that we really enjoyed in the 100 degree Tulsa heat on Saturday. Our first night's dinner was actually what I would call (as a confirmed 'foodie') spectacular. At the recommendation of some folks at the Best Western, we went to a seafood restaurant called Bodeans.

I was blown away. The place was very elegant, the decor in light pastels, set the stage. We started with a glass of our favorite chardonnay, La Crema. This was a wine that we first tried the day we had lobster in Maine. This was a very close second place experience. I ordered the fresh catch of the day, ocean trout, which I suspected would be what we often see listed as steelhead trout. I believe this is more of a salmon than a trout and it was so good. I like to describe it as a dish that tastes as though you took an excellent cut of salmon and soaked it in a butter sauce. While it definitely was not covered with butter, it absolutely melted at each bite. It came with smoked cheddar polenta, asparagus, sun-dried tomato buerre rouge and balsamic syrup. Carol had the seared jumbo sea scallops with baby squash, ricotta salatta, port wine and penne pasta. http://www.bodean.net/

Saturday, Carol had to train so I got a chance to see the new dog in action. He is a very impressive K-9 and I enjoyed watching them work. There was no way to top our first dinner, so we decided on a place in the same plaza for the next night, Osaka Fantasy Japanese Steakhouse. It was pretty standard Japanese steakhouse. I stayed with the seafood theme and was impressed at the tenderness of the calamari. Carol had steak as well as the calamari and agreed it was very good. After dinner, we chatted with our table mates. They asked us if we had any kids and it was so refreshing to see that young couples like they were did not assume that we did not.

Sunday, we took a drive to Oklahoma City. We visited the Memorial of the OK Federal Building bombing site, an awful reminder of home-grown domestic terrorism. I still cannot get my thoughts to consider how someone can do what was done. 168 people were killed on April 19, 1995, including 19 children. It was also a sober reminder, considering why Carol was attending this training, to never let your guard down.

From there, we stopped by the very small Oklahoma City Gay Pride Celebration. We found it that it is Tulsa that has the big one in early June. There wasn't much going on there, so we headed back and for t e final night, it was time to try Tex Mex. We had a great meal at Monterey's Little Mexico.

From there, it was back home for me and both of us were back to our frozen health choice diet dinners for a few more days.
