Wisconsin 2001
As a child, I remember visiting the Wisconsin Dells. But the biggest impression made on my child’s mind of Wisconsin was Vince Lombardi and the Green Bay Packers. I had a paperback that chronicled the championship football games and early Super Bowls. The Green Bay Packers were major players during this era of football. Living in St. Louis , we had Cardinal football which was far from inspiring before ultimately packing it in for Arizona . So I became a cheese head and a Bart Starr fan.
Our Wisconsin vacation was centered around my 40th BD. Carol had worked long and hard to take me to an amazing place called Sybaris which was located in southern Wisconsin. So we built the vacation around that. We started out in Madison , a beautiful city that I found quite impressive. We stayed in a B&B that was originally a home designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. The only downside was the heat wave that came through and the fact that we were staying on the third floor. But it was a beautiful college town, filled with lakes, rowing teams out practicing and a beautiful campus. We happened by chance to stumble on to their annual pride parade and got to see Tammy Baldwin marching in the parade. We ate dinner at this amazing restaurant but ordered soft-shelled crab which turned out to be a mistake. Let’s just say “never again”. Our next stop was a day in the Wisconsin Dells and a ride on the classic ducks. It was just as I remembered it from childhood and a lot of fun.

We went on to Milwaukee and went to the Brewer’s brand new stadium (this was 2001) for a game. We were very impressed with the stadium and enjoyed watching the bratwurst/sausage race during the 7th inning stretch. We were also lucky that they were having an autograph session with many of the women that played baseball during WWII. We got some great photos and signatures. Milwaukee wouldn’t be complete without a stop at the Miller Brewing Company tour. We also spent a lovely day walking downtown along the riverfront. I was impressed to see a rainbow flag flying as part of a diversity display. Our next stop was a small town near Sybaris , Cedar Creek, where we stopped in at a small winery and picked up some supplies for our stay at Sybaris .
There is not much I can say about Sybaris except is the most amazing, romantic destination ever. We had our own private loft, swimming pool, jacuzzi, gas fireplace, and more. It was beautiful and some day, we must return.
We left Sybaris , knowing that we were not ready to drive home yet, so we went as far as Lake Geneva . I had been there years ago on a ski trip. This time, it was a beautiful summer day, cool and gorgeous. We found the last hotel room in town with a beautiful lake view and knew that we had to get out on the water so we found a tour just leaving. It showed us around many of the historic homes along the lake including the Wrigley mansion.
Wisconsin has an ugly law despite the fact that it is known as a fairly progressive state. This law makes it illegal to leave the state to marry if that marriage is not legal in Wisconsin .
My 1000 places to visit calendar has two interesting Wisconsin recommendations. One is a modern architectural wonder in the form of the Milwaukee Art Museum . The second destination is the Experimental Aircraft Association’s Air Venture event in Osh Kosh.
I could easily spend another vacation in Wisconsin and following is a list of things I would still enjoy.
1-Door County
3-Ferry to Michigan
3-Green Bay (Packer's preseason game)
