Independence Mo and Remembering Columbia in February

This year, we are taking some short weekend get-away trips in our own home state. On the way across the state, we stopped at Arrow Rock SP and had lunch at the J. Huston Tavern. It is the oldest continually operating restaurant west of the Mississippi.

From there, we made our way to Independence, MO. We stayed at the Hawthorn Bed and Breakfast which was a beautiful stone Victorian home.

Our first event was at Kaufman Stadium to see  some inter-league play, the Cardinals against the Royals. We went to the game on Friday but it was a 3 game series and the Cardinals swept the last place Royals. This sweep solidified their mid-August 3rd place position in the National League Central. We really enjoyed visiting the stadium. It is the 12th stadium we have visited in our quest to see all 30 of them. The waterfall is a very nice feature. There were a lot of Cardinal fans but I have to also say that all the Royals fans were very nice and appreciative that we were there.

After our hearty breakfast at the Hawthorn, we headed out to tour the Truman Library. I really enjoyed it and was struck by how many major decision that he had to make during his presidency. A lot of world events came to him fast and furiously after Roosevelt died soon after taking office in 1945.

From the Truman Library, we went on to do a tour of an amazing old Victorian mansion, the Vaile House. The tour guide gave us the bland version of the Vaile family but I found some stories online that seem to indicate that Mr. Vaile was charged with mail fraud and Mrs. Vaile took a morphine overdose because of it.

Our last event was to check out the downtown of Independence and have dinner at the Cafe Verona.

Next time, we want to try Salvatore's as that came highly recommended.

Remembering our February trip to Columbia:

It was a cold winter day when we drove up to Columbia to see the Missouri women play Mississippi State in basketball. Miss State had upset the Connecticut Huskies in our NCAA trip to Dallas and we wanted to see them play again. It was a great game though Mizzou lost.  We also visited a few historic sites in Columbia, Jewell SHS and the Rock Bridge SP.  We had a classic lunch at Shakespeare's Pizza and another lunch at the Broadway Brewery.
